How to Breed Axolotl in Minecraft

Axolotls are a passive mob living in the Lush Caves biome, especially when a clay block is under a spawning space. Players can breed them, and their offspring have a chance to develop mutations. Though it sounds fun to do, not everyone is aware of what the process requires.

How to Breed Axolotl in Minecraft

If you’re looking to breed colorful axolotls, look no further than this article. We’ll cover everything from materials to mutation colors. These creatures are excellent if you have a pond near your home.

Breeding Axolotls

The Lush Caves in Minecraft are home to axolotls. You can only make the breed by feeding them a Bucket of Tropical Fish. However, it’s one of several Buckets of Aquatic Mobs. Others include:

Only a Bucket of Aquatic Fish will successfully make axolotls breed. Furthermore, there are many tropical fish choices, like:

Besides these, there are many other species. Below is a more comprehensive list of fish available.

Part 2

Part 3

  • Yellowtail Parrotfish
  • Yellow Tang

Catching any of these in a bucket is enough, but you may also trade with Wandering Traders for some varieties. Here’s how the process goes to start the breeding process:

  1. Grab some Buckets of Tropical Fish.
  2. Drop the contents onto two axolotls.
  3. Feed them until they begin emitting heart particles.
  4. Wait for them to breed.
  5. A baby axolotl will spawn nearby.
  6. Repeat the breeding process after five minutes.

When holding these buckets, axolotls may start following you. That’s when they’re susceptible to entering “Love Mode” or when you see those particles.

Feeding baby axolotls one Bucket of Tropical Fish will decrease the growing time by 10%. You can give them as many buckets as you want.

Axolotl Mutations

Each axolotl will be one of five colors. They are:

Leucistic axolotls resemble their actual counterparts in real life. They have a fleshy pink and white color often seen when people keep axolotls as pets. Brown is the color usually associated with wild axolotls.

Standard genetics usually implies that offspring will resemble the parents, but Minecraft axolotls have a unique chance of being blue. Each baby has a 0.083% chance of getting the blue mutation, even if there is at least one blue parent. Otherwise, there’s a 99.917% chance of matching one of the parents.

In short, if you breed a Leucistic and Gold axolotl, there’s a tiny chance of getting a blue one. It’s best to be prepared for that eventuality.

How to Use Axolotls

Because axolotls in Minecraft die after spending five minutes outside water, transporting them can be somewhat problematic. Fortunately, you can catch them with buckets and carry them in your inventory.

Axolotls may be passive mobs, but they attack all aquatic mobs except these four types.

  • Turtles
  • Dolphins
  • Frogs
  • Other axolotls

They will also help you hunt down aquatic enemies like the Drowned. Each attack deals two points of damage, and releasing several is enough to wipe out a small group of targets. After finishing off a non-hostile aquatic mob, you must wait for two minutes before they will do it again.

There’s no cooldown for hostile mobs like Guardians and Elder Guardians. They will fight these and more on sight.

In battle, each axolotl will grant players Regeneration I for five seconds; the limit is two minutes of healing. When a player dispatches a mob fighting an axolotl, their Mining Fatigue is also removed.

You can see that bringing a few Buckets of Axolotls to an aquatic fight is an excellent idea. However, these creatures also have their peculiarities.

When an axolotl is damaged underwater, it may choose to play dead and fall to the floor while healing for 10 seconds. There’s a 1-3 chance of getting four hearts when an axolotl plays dead. When they’re in this state, hostile mobs will ignore them.

It’s best to keep your axolotls near a body of water as they can’t find it if too far away. They will attempt to search for rivers or ponds, but if five minutes pass, they’ll die. This limit also applies to axolotls that are passengers in boats.

Adorable Monsters

As cute as these Minecraft axolotls appear, they’re absolutely ruthless when they detect hostile aquatic mobs or the Drowned nearby. This trait makes them excellent warriors you can release in combat, and they happily return to their buckets when you’re about to leave. Breeding them isn’t tricky, as all you need are Buckets of Tropical Fish.
